To Tattoo or not Tattoo?

It is anyone’s guess why so many people who come to Ko Samui, or any beach resort for that matter, leave sporting some monstrous tattoo on their personage. It seems that tattoo artists are more prevalent than bakers, bookshops or any of the other necessities of life.

There are lots of tattoo artists on Samui producing work of varying quality. Thankfully most tend to provide a reasonable standard of hygiene. Although, if taking the plunge, it is well worthwhile taking a leaf out of Alexander the Great’s book and making sure any big decision seems like a good idea when both drunk and sober before going under the needle.

Thailand’s infamous monks tattoos, supposedly granting magical powers to the recipient, are occasionally available at Big Buddha temple. However, recent reports suggest there are too many health risks associated, so extreme caution is advisable.

If sharp bamboo being thrust through the skin seems a little to primal, you may want to seek the services of an experienced Western tattooist. Tattoo Mania, owned by French expat Esther, at Bophut Fisherman’s Village, comes very highly recommended. She underwent a four-year apprenticeship with the legendary Khun Nong, considered one of Samui’s best tattoo artists.

And the studio offers a full variety of tribal, traditional or modern designs. All can be individually tailored to the recipient’s precise preferences. And remember, like marriage this is a life-long commitment so think hard before handing over your cash.
