Samui tourists looking for a break from non-stop partying in discos and clubs in Lamai and Chaweng might find that an evening spent in one of the island’s English or Irish pubs will do the trick. I went with a few friends recently to Ban Bang Rak, close to Big Buddha Beach, where two English pubs are almost exactly like the real thing.

The Elephant & Castle and the Admiral Lord Nelson are both decorated in that traditional English public house style and serve up draught beers and British culinary gems such as steak and kidney pie. The Admiral Lord Nelson is a bit of an overkill on its name, but is noted for its ambient atmosphere and tasty fish and chips. The pub has a good selection of Thai and British dishes on its menu. It shows Premiership football, features a pool table and plays British music.

As its name implies the Elephant & Castle exemplifies a London pub and patrons walking through its portal almost feel as if they have taken a wrong turning somewhere. The Elephant opens up just before lunch, yet is rarely busy until the evening. A diverse Brit-food menu boasts bangers and mash, homemade pies and Sunday roasts to die for.

Samui’s legendary nightlife and entertainment venues have transformed some areas of Thailand’s party isle beyond all recognition. The only constants are soft sandy beaches and translucent waters. The resort of Bophut has bucked the trend and still retains lots of its original architecture and laid-back island ambience.

The heritage Fisherman’s Village is the focal point of establishments that offer unhurried gourmand’s meals and relaxing drinks. The dining choice is eclectic with the finest Thai seafood dishes as well as Italian, Indian and Mexican offerings available for delectation. Alla Baia’s pizzas and unique creations such as Fifty-Six Fusion’s mango burgers are highly recommended. My Friend is a little out of town, but serves up excellent seafood at prices only leaving a tiny dent in the wallet.

In keeping with the local council’s desire to keep Bophut low-key, there are few rowdy or late-night drinking venues here. Visitors are encouraged to head over to nearby Chaweng for disco and club entertainment. One Bophut bar, the Frog & Gecko, epitomises Bophut’s drinking establishments with a soothing place to sit down and a terrace cooled by gentle breezes. The bar is only really busy on Wednesdays when the weekly pub quiz is held.

The beach at Phoput is rarely crowded and even the ubiquitous Thai jet-skis have been banished to one part of it. Sunbathers and swimmers are rarely disturbed by the whine of a jet-ski engine.

While some of the bigger Samui resorts and hotels include gala dinners and entertainment for Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve in their festive season packages, not every accommodation venue does. Those looking for alternative Christmas entertainment, or somewhere to dine on the big day, will find there are plentiful places that fit the bill.

Western themed bars and restaurants mostly post up their entertainment offerings and Christmas menus on boards outside their premises. A walk around Lamai or Chaweng will soon provide ideas of where to go. The BBC, or Big Buddha Café, is serving an all-day Christmas buffet which gives visitors the opportunity of enjoying a fusion of Thai and Western delicacies. The menu includes the ubiquitous tom yam gung spicy soup, samosas, roast turkey, stuffing and apple pie.

On Lamai Beach, entertainment at the Beach Republic begins at 13:00 on Christmas Eve when DJ Simon cranks up the decks and there are special offers on beer and wine. In the evening, the eclectic dinner menu’s offerings include a lamb and turkey carvery, with live music played by the Rock Island Band. Christmas Day lunch gives diners the chance of sampling culinary gems, among which are Alaskan king crabs, oysters and roast turkey dinners.

Koh Samui is better known for its pulsating discos and bar beers than its traditional pubs. Over the past decade, several Irish and English style pubs have opened for business on the island. As I have a fondness for draught Guinness I have tended to try and locate Irish bars in every place that I have travelled to. On Samui I found one in each of the main resorts of Lamai, Chaweng and Bophut.

Those with even a passing familiarity of Irish names, customs and signage will easily pick out the Shamrock, Tropical Murphy’s and the Emerald Bar. Tropical Murphy’s is opposite McDonald’s in Chaweng and is a great venue for pub-grub, an Ulster fry, special fried rice and a Sunday roast. This pub also offers a full drinks menu, including some unusual shooters and draught beer. It is open from 09:00 to 01:00 every day.

The Shamrock Irish Pub is a two-minute walk from Lamai’s iconic beach. Since its establishment in 2005 the Shamrock has garnered a loyal clientele with its well-kept Guinness, Kilkenny and Tiger. An eclectic food menu offers items such as breakfasts, burgers, pizzas and Thai culinary gems. Big-screen TVs show live premiership football and other major sports fixtures. Live entertainment commences at 21:30 nightly.

Those in the know say that the Emerald at the Fisherman’s Village in Bophut is Samui’s best Irish bar. Walking through its doors leaves a feeling of being transported back to Dublin. The emphasis here is on tasty pub-grub, pints of Guinness and a relaxing ambience. The magnificent views from the Emerald’s back deck over the Gulf of Thailand remind visitors that they are still in tropical paradise.

Chaweng is the hub of Koh Samui’s legendary nightlife venues. Most of the establishments are on the town’s Chaweng Beach Road, or in the small sois (lanes) leading off it. The abundance and diversity of the bars and clubs ensures that there is something to suit all tastes and musical preferences.

Soi Green Mango is the busiest and most vibrant of the sois and takes its name from the original party venue extraordinaire the Green Mango Nightclub. This club has spacious dance areas and lots of bars. It offers contemporary lighting and some of the most progressive sounds around. Other dance bars on the horseshoe shaped soi include Solo Bar. There are numerous other beer-bars on the soi which all seem to offer different music and be competing with each other for volume.

Soi Reggae is the second bar district in Chaweng and is beside Chaweng Lake. The Reggae Pub is the focal point of the entertainment here and features international DJs spinning funky sounds and a massive dance floor. Two alternate venues for entertainment near the soi are Samui Bungy Jump and the Muay Thai boxing stadium. Both offer activities that are a great warm-up for a night on the town in Chaweng.

Samui become a major tourist destination in Thailand and over the past twenty years, Chaweng beach has been transformed from a nearly deserted tropical bay, inhabited by a handful of fishermen and visited by a few adventurous backpackers, into a vibrant, busy, cosmopolitan resort town which led it to be the most popular tourist area on Koh Sami island because of it’s 5 kilometers of white sand beach, water sports, entertainment venues, shopping facilities and a fabulous range of dinning options.

Chewing’s development was naturally centered on the beach as the main road runs parallel to it with resorts and hotels lined along the entire length of the beach with the northern end and southern end, calmer for family oriented atmosphere, while around the center, nightlife, takes place near the famous Soi Green Mango with Budget beach resorts, attracting the younger crowd.

Over the years, Chaweng Beach has developed at an incredible pace and as a result, the infrastructure does not always keep up with the demand and the seedier side of Thai tourism is in evidence but not dominant as it can easily be avoided and the overall atmosphere, will appeal to anyone because wherever you stay on this beach, service and amenity is conveniently close at hand.

Chaweng beach road is lined with shops, restaurants and bars of every size and description. You will also find the international chains such as Starbucks and Burger King alongside rickety canvas-covered market stalls.

Long stretches of the main road are occupied by small local business selling many different souvenirs, handicrafts with money changing booths and ATMs, internet cafes, laundry services, travel agents, car and motorbike rentals and international-style pharmacies like Boots, fill the spaces in between.

So if you are wondering where to go for your holiday, Chaweng Beach on Koh Samui island is always a good option if you love water sports, water adventures and even if you don’t, the island has so much to offer that at the end of your holiday, you won’t have done have the things to be done on the island.

Samui is one of the major tourist destinations in Thailand because it’s tourism attractions and the nightlife, Samui has sophiscated gourmet restaurants ranging up to the full moon parties. You name it, they have it from Discos, clubs, music venues, bar beers, classical Thai dancing, mud wrestling and even weekly Thai lady wrestling.

Samui is divided into various areas where you can go at night and have fun.

- Chaweng is Koh Samui’s party central, all along the beach road, you will see Sois ( small streets leading off into warrens of bars and pubs of varying appeal and popularity. The epic- center of all this hedonism and fun is undoubtly Soi, Green Mango in the central Chaweng, with soi Reggae by the lake which is also very famous.

- Lamai Beach is slightly smaller than Chaweng beach and slightly older but has everything from the ubiquitous beer bars, discos, music venues with lots of foot stomping, classical Thai dancing, mud wrestling and of course, weekly Thai lady boxing.

- There is also Maenam which is a romantic for couples with quiet evening where your loved one is bound to be more than sipping cocktails as he or she will have watch the sunset and despite what many will tell you, this coastal village has more on offer. The nightlife, than meets the eye.

- Koh Samui, has more to offer during nighttime and it is absolutely up to you to decide where or what to do, for example, the Island offers Lady-Boy cabaret shows which may not be everyone’s fancy, but for those who enjoy Thailand’s Katoey’s because they are really professional and very famous, they love these shows, so try it, you will never believe what they pull off.

When you’re holidaying on a tropical island paradise like Koh Samui, the last thing on your mind would probably be sub-zero temperatures. However, there is none other than an ice bar at Koh Samui that has temperatures of minus seven degrees! The bar is known as Bar Ice Koh Samui. It is the only themed ice bar with temperatures as low as minus seven degrees.

Now, one of the biggest concerns you might have about going to an ice bar in the middle of a tropical island is that you will freeze without any of your normal winter clothing. Rest assured, as the ice bar has thought of that. When you enter the bar you will be given a beautiful jacket, hat and gloves to keep yourself warm while you’re enjoying yourself.

Bar Ice is quite a stunning place to look at. There are all kinds of ice sculptures in the bar, and the bar itself is made entirely of ice. The cups are even ice, which means you can literally just throw them on the ground to melt away when you’re done!

You might be wondering just where the English owners of Bar Ice Koh Samui found all of the ice to actually build such a place. After all, Thailand isn’t really known for its freezing temperatures, and the only place you find ice in Thailand is in your drinks. The owners actually ship the ice out from Canada.

Bar Ice Koh Samui is found at the north end of Chaweng Beach in Moo two.

Koh Samui is renowned for its stunning tropical beaches, and warm evenings spent sipping cocktails or a cool beer by the beach. So, if I told you that in the heart of Koh Samui was the world’s only themed -7 degree ice bar, you would probably think I was crazy! Yet, Bar Ice, the name of Koh Samui’s very own frozen bar delights visitors every night with their fine variety of vodkas and cocktails in the very cool (literally!) setting. No expense has been spared at Bar Ice, with the ice itself being imported all the way from Canada. According to the owner, the crystal clear waters from Canada is what make this particular ice so stunning to look at, and, I have to say I think they may be right. The ice sculptures at Bar Ice are just amazing, and are sure to impress anyone who comes to Bar Ice.

If you’re looking to escape the heat, then there really is no better choice! The bar is made completely of ice, even the glasses in which your well-made cocktail is served is made entirely of ice! Before entering Bar Ice, customers are given a designer coat, hat and gloves to keep them warm in the chilly surrounds while they enjoy a very refreshing drink or two!

The Bar Ice hosts a number of events throughout the year including band nights, and other exciting themed nights. There is a cover charge to enter the bar, but all who have been agree that this is most definitely worth it! Bar Ice is located right on the main road at Chaweng Beach.

Whilst Koh Samui conjures up images of a beach resort with its white sandy beaches and crystal clear water, and its party atmosphere with its many tourists who flock to the bars each night, there is also a very cultural side to Koh Samui which should be experienced by anyone interested in the arts and more cultured pursuits.

One of the most interesting and anticipated events on Koh Samui’s arts calendar is the Ten stars Art Party which is a recurring cultural event bringing together art lovers from Thailand and abroad. The event features a wide variety of artists and their newest work. The Ten Stars Sumui Art Party takes place twice a month at various 5 star resorts and hotels, as well as other upmarket venues throughout the island. The main idea of these events is to build and strengthen the local art community which has produced a number of exciting new artists in recent times. It is certainly a great chance for art lovers to come and enjoy some new kinds of work, as each party features a variety of presentations from local artists.

It is also highly recommended to come to the Ten Stars Samui Art Party if you’re looking to purchase some unique artwork during your trip to Thailand. Art on display is available for purchase, and all proceeds from sales are donated to the Green Island Project Samui, which is a foundation dedicated to supporting education, awareness, and a variety of projects which develop and sustain the beauty of Koh Samui.
